IDLTM

  • The International Diploma in Language Teaching Management is a course designed to offer training and support to academic managers in the world of ELT.  It was designed by professionals and experts from those in our industry and who know the specific needs and contexts of people working in ELT management.  In addition those who train on and deliver the course are similarly drawn from the industry, and as a result the course really meets the needs of its participants.
  • The course and qualification has been around since 2001, and has over the last twenty years served groups of managers all over the world. The pandemic, sadly, forced an unanticipated break on the delivery of the course, but we have used that time to redevelop the course into a purely online format (previously the course was blended), that was relaunched in 2022.
  • If you are currently working in management, or looking to transition into management, this is the course for you.

The course covers the key skills needed to successfully manage in any kind of language teaching organisation – whether they be private language schools, university departments, refugee resettlement programmes or beyond.  The course has 8 modules:

  • Managing Organisations – This module provides an overview and introduction into managing organisations, with a specific focus on the theory and practice of managing organisations and the potential differences between educational organisations and other types of organisations. Specific attention is given to learning organisations and organisational development.
  • Human Resource Management – This module matches the organisational needs to the required resources and looks at recruitment, induction, motivation, training and development, and communication across the organisation.
  • Managing Financial Resources – This module focuses on interpreting and using financial procedures and systems. This includes analysing and producing financial information in your specific context.
  • Marketing – This module covers marketing and promotional theory and focus on the marketing process and marketing plan within a teaching organisation.
  • Customer and Client Services – This module looks at how to effectively generate and deal with customer feedback and how to integrate quality assurance into the organisation and its work.
  • Project Management – This module aims to help you identify a need, setting goals and objectives, developing a strategy and schedule, conducting a stakeholder analysis, and monitoring and evaluating the overall project.
  • Managing Change – This module looks at managing and sustaining change. A variety of change management models are looked at with specific focus on the theory and practical application of these models.
  • Academic Management – This module looks at curriculum and course design, teacher development, and other areas of academic management including the delivery and monitoring of courses

Each module is assessed by means of a practical assignment which is intended to be of value to the person taking the course (and their organisation), as well as being an assessment tool for the diploma itself. To give an example, the marketing assignment is to create a marketing plan for a new course, while the financial management assignment involves creating a fully costed proposal for some development of the organisation. The focus of the individual assignment will be discussed with the course tutor to ensure that all areas of assessment are covered, but also that the assignment is of immediate value to the course participant and their organisation.

All our course tutors are experienced managers from around the globe to ensure that participants are exposed to a range of views and contexts. The tutors are experts in ELT management and train on areas of their own expertise and experience.

The main course tutor and course director is Andy Hockely. Andy is a freelance educational management consultant and has been involved in ELT for more than 30 years. He has trained all over the globe for more than 20 years and has been coordinating and training on the IDLTM since its inception in 2001. He is the co-author of the very popular ‘From Teacher to Manager’ (CUP, 2008) which is suggested reading for the course. He is also co-author of ‘Managing Technological Change’ (CUP, 2021), Managing Education in the Digital Age’ (The Round, 2014) and the author of ‘Educational Management’ (Polirom, 2007).
